About the Area Converter

Areas show up in property listings, floor plans, farm records and map data, and each of those worlds prefers a different unit. This converter moves a number between square millimetres, square centimetres, square metres, ares, hectares, square kilometres, square inches, square feet, square yards, acres and square miles.

The factors used are the exact definitions rather than rounded shortcuts. An acre is 4046.8564224 square metres because it is defined as 4840 square yards and a yard is exactly 0.9144 metres. A hectare stays a clean 10000 square metres. Since area scales with the square of a length, small rounding errors grow quickly, so ten significant figures are kept internally and rounding is only applied when you ask for it.

One thing worth remembering is that square feet and feet are not interchangeable: 100 square feet is roughly 9.29 square metres, not 30.48. If the plain distance version is what you need, open the Length Converter. Every result is followed by the formula and a table of round numbers so the answer can be sanity checked at a glance.

How to use

  1. Enter one area value per line.
  2. Choose the source and target units.

Common questions

How many square feet are in a square metre?
One square metre is about 10.7639 square feet, so a 20 square metre room is roughly 215 square feet.
Is an acre the same everywhere?
The international acre used here is 4046.8564224 square metres. The old US survey acre differs by about two parts per million and is not offered.
Can I convert a list of plot sizes at once?
Yes. Put one number on each line and every line is converted with the unit pair you selected.
Why does the table show slightly different figures to the lines above it?
The table rounds to eight significant figures for readability while the converted lines keep ten. Choose a fixed rounding to make both match.
