About the Playback Speed Calculator

Speeding up a recording divides its length by the multiplier, so watch time = length / speed and the time you keep is the difference. A ninety minute lecture at 1.5x runs for exactly sixty minutes and hands back half an hour. The saving is not linear in the way most people guess: going from 1x to 1.5x saves 33 percent of the runtime, while pushing on from 1.5x to 2x saves only another 17 percent, so each step up buys less than the one before.

Enter the length in hours, minutes and seconds and set any speed between 0.1x and 16x. The result gives the new runtime in both clock format and words, the time saved, the share of the original you still sit through, and the minutes saved for every hour of source video. A table underneath prices the common presets from 1.25x to 3x at once, which is quicker than trying them one at a time.

Speeds below 1x work too, which is what you want for transcription, language practice or picking apart a fast demonstration. Comprehension research suggests most people follow speech comfortably up to about 1.5x, with recall falling off beyond roughly 2x for unfamiliar material, so the ceiling depends on how new the content is. For a plain seconds to hours conversion without a speed factor, the Duration Formatter is simpler.

How to use

  1. Enter the video length in hours, minutes and seconds.
  2. Set the playback speed you plan to use, or one below 1x to slow it down.
  3. Read the new runtime and the time saved in plain words.
  4. Scan the preset table to see what every common speed would give you.

Common questions

How much time does 2x really save?
Exactly half the runtime. A two hour recording becomes one hour, which is the largest saving any single step up delivers.
Does faster playback change the pitch?
Modern players correct pitch as they speed audio up, so voices stay natural rather than turning squeaky.
What speed is best for studying?
Around 1.25x to 1.5x for new material, faster for revision of something you already know well.
Can I calculate a slower speed?
Yes, enter a value below 1 such as 0.75. The watch time then exceeds the original length and the saving shows as extra time spent.
