About the Random Fraction Generator
Numerators here run from 1 to 11 and denominators are drawn from 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 16. That set is not arbitrary: those are the denominators that appear in ruler markings, recipe measures and the standard school curriculum, so the fractions convert to sensible decimals and share common factors worth cancelling. A generator that allowed denominators like 97 would produce arithmetic no worksheet wants.
Because the numerator can exceed the denominator you will see improper fractions such as 11/4, which is on purpose. Improper fractions are exactly what a mixed number exercise needs, and a run of twenty gives a class a mixture of proper, improper and reducible values in one go. Some draws land on values equal to one, like 6/6, which makes a useful discussion point about what a fraction really means.
Repeats are allowed by default because a drill benefits from the occasional recurring value, though you can switch them off for a set of distinct questions. - Numerators go up to 11, so improper fractions like 9/4 appear on purpose for mixed number and simplification practice.
- Are the fractions already simplified?
- No. Values such as 4/8 are left as drawn precisely so students can reduce them.
- Can I get decimals instead?
- Not from this tool. Divide the results in a spreadsheet, or use a unit converter if you need the decimal equivalents.
