About the WHOIS Lookup

WHOIS is the registry's public record of a domain. This page reads it through RDAP, the structured protocol that registries adopted to replace the old text WHOIS, so the fields are consistent across TLDs: registrar and its IANA id, registrant name where the registry still publishes one, the registration, expiry and last-changed dates, the EPP status codes such as clientTransferProhibited, DNSSEC state, and the delegated name servers. Enter an IP address instead and the same lookup returns the network block, its owner, country and allocation dates from the regional registry.

Since privacy rules took effect most registrant contact details are redacted, so expect the registrar and the dates rather than a person's address. The expiry date is the number worth watching: a domain that lapses goes through redemption and auction, and a site or mailbox on it stops working before that.

The query goes from our edge function to rdap.org, which forwards it to the registry responsible for the name or block; only the name you typed is sent and it is not stored. For the live DNS side of the domain use the DNS lookup.

How to use

  1. Enter a domain such as example.com, or an IPv4 or IPv6 address.
  2. Press Look up; a subdomain is reduced to its registrable domain automatically.
  3. Check the expiry line and status codes; copy or download the record.

Common questions

Why is the owner missing?
Registries redact personal data under GDPR and similar rules. The registrar, dates and name servers remain public; a company name appears when the registrant chose to publish it.
What do the status codes mean?
They are EPP flags set by the registrar or registry. clientTransferProhibited means transfer lock is on; pendingDelete means the name is about to be released; ok means no restriction.
Which TLDs work?
All generic TLDs and most country codes that run RDAP. A few ccTLD registries do not publish RDAP and return not found.
Does it show IP ownership?
Yes. Enter an address and the regional registry (ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC or AFRINIC) answers with the block and the organisation holding it.
