About the Pressure Converter

Pressure is force spread over an area, and the pascal that defines it is tiny: one newton on one square metre. That is why practical units multiply it heavily. A bar is 100000 pascals and sits close to atmospheric pressure at sea level, which makes it a comfortable everyday reference for tyres, dive gear and hydraulics.

Tyre pressure is the conversion people look up most. A 2.2 bar recommendation is 31.9 psi, and 220 kPa is the same figure again because a bar is 100 kilopascals. Weather reports use hectopascals or millibars, which are numerically identical, so 1013 hPa and 1013 mbar describe the same standard day. The standard atmosphere is defined as exactly 101325 pascals.

The column units come from real instruments. A torr is one seven hundred and sixtieth of an atmosphere, defined so that a barometer reading 760 mm of mercury equals one atmosphere, while the millimetre of mercury is fixed slightly differently at 133.322387415 pascals and is what blood pressure cuffs report. Inches of mercury appear in aviation altimeter settings, and inches of water measure the very low pressures in ductwork. Kilopounds per square inch cover material strength figures. Common questions

How many psi is 1 bar?
About 14.5038 psi. A 2 bar tyre pressure is roughly 29 psi.
Is a bar the same as an atmosphere?
Very close but not identical. One atmosphere is 101325 pascals and one bar is 100000 pascals, a gap of about 1.3 percent.
What is the difference between torr and mmHg?
They agree to about one part in seven million. Torr is defined from the atmosphere and mmHg from a mercury column of fixed density.
Does this handle gauge and absolute pressure?
It converts the number you supply. If your reading is gauge pressure, add one atmosphere first to get the absolute value.
