About the Random Quote Generator
Sixty-six quotations sit behind this generator, each printed with the person who said or wrote it. The range runs from Socrates and Marcus Aurelius through Franklin and Thoreau to Marie Curie, Helen Keller, Maya Angelou and Nelson Mandela, so a handful of draws crosses two thousand years rather than circling the same three motivational posters.
Attribution was the hard part of building the list. Half the quotations floating around the internet are pinned to the wrong person, so anything with a contested source was left out, along with lines that are really paraphrases invented decades after the speaker died. What remains is the material that stands up when somebody checks it, which matters if the quote is going into a slide deck or a school newsletter.
Typical uses are opening a presentation, filling a quote of the day slot, printing a card, or giving a writing class a line to respond to. - Are the attributions checked?
- Yes. Quotations with disputed or invented sources were excluded, and only widely documented lines were kept.
- Can I use these quotes publicly?
- Short attributed quotations are normally fine to reproduce with the author named, which is how the output is formatted.
- Why is my favourite quote missing?
- Many popular quotes are misattributed. If the real source could not be established, the line was left out rather than passed on.
- Does the same quote come up twice?
- Not while No repeats is ticked. With it off, repeats become possible in longer runs.
