About the XBOX GamerTag Generator

Both word pools were written short on purpose. The 60 adjectives top out at six letters and the 60 nouns at seven, so a plain pair usually lands between six and eleven characters and still has room for the digits Microsoft expects when a popular word is already claimed. Ace, Rogue, Zippy and Frost sit beside Lynx, Mamba, Puffin and Stag, which keeps the results punchy rather than wordy.

A modern Xbox gamertag can be up to twelve characters, and a suffix of a hash and a number is added automatically when the base text is already in use. That suffix is the reason the digit styles here are useful: adding your own two or four digits often gets you a tag with no system suffix at all. Longer legacy tags of up to fifteen characters exist from earlier years, so if a four digit style pushes a result past twelve, trim a word rather than the numbers.

Only letters, digits and spaces are permitted, which is why nothing here uses underscores or punctuation. Generate a batch of thirty, say them out loud, and keep the ones a friend could repeat over a headset without spelling it letter by letter. For a streaming handle where underscores are allowed the Twitch Name Generator is the better fit, and console players on the other platform should try the PSN Name Generator.

How to use

  1. Choose a Tag style, using a digit style when you expect the plain words to be taken.
  2. Ask for twenty or thirty tags so you have plenty to reject.
  3. Press Generate and skim for tags of twelve characters or fewer.
  4. Test the shortlist in the Xbox gamertag change screen, which tells you what is free.

Common questions

How long can an Xbox gamertag be?
New gamertags allow up to twelve characters, and Xbox appends a hash and a number when the text you chose is already taken.
Can a gamertag contain an underscore?
No. Xbox permits letters, digits and spaces only, so every style on this page sticks to letters and digits.
Is changing a gamertag free?
The first change on an account is free and later changes are paid, so it is worth testing a shortlist before you commit.
Why do so many of these tags end in digits?
Short word pairs are popular and get claimed quickly, and a couple of digits is the simplest way to make a familiar pair yours.
