About the Wizard Name Generator
Four pools feed this generator: 60 given names, 55 surnames, 30 titles and 40 epithets. Given names are long and vowel heavy, which is what makes Lumindra and Peredur sound like people who read too much. Surnames are compounds built from the tools of the trade, so Inkwarden, Lanternfell, Oakenscroll and Rimefeather all suggest a study, a staff or a habit before the character says a word.
The title list runs from the ceremonial, Archmage and Grand Enchanter, down to the modest and slightly comic, Hedge Wizard and Book Binder. Picking a low title on purpose is a fast way to make a wizard likeable, since a Hedge Wizard with a grand surname reads as someone with more ambition than budget. Epithets work the other way and describe a reputation rather than a rank: Ink-Stained, Slow to Anger, Star-Counted, Half-Forgotten.
Each part is drawn separately, so titles, names and epithets mix freely and rerolling gives you a different combination every press. If the four line style feels crowded, generate names only and add the title yourself once you know what the character has actually earned. - Can I get a short name without a surname?
- Generate the name only style and keep the first word. Many spellcasters go by a single name once they are well known.
