About the Magic School Name Generator
Real universities are named after where they stand and what they are for, and invented ones sound better when they follow the same rule. Each result combines one of 70 place names such as Frostmere or Jackdaw Court, one of five institution types, and one of 60 disciplines. That gives 21,000 schools, and each one implies a curriculum before you write a word of it.
The disciplines are the interesting half. Knot Magic, Ritual Bookkeeping, Threshold Studies, Grave Courtesies and Weather Persuasion all suggest a syllabus, a difficult examination and a professor with strong opinions. A conservatory of Whisper Craft and an institute of Iron Warding would not admit the same students, which is where school rivalries come from.
For a series bible, generate five, put them in different regions, and let the discipline decide which one your protagonist could not get into. - It is what the school is famous for teaching, which sets the curriculum, the entrance exam and the kind of student it attracts.
- Is Seminary different from Academy here?
- Only in tone. A seminary suggests religious training, a conservatory suggests performance, and an institute suggests research.
- Can I use these in a published story?
- Yes. The place names and disciplines were written for this tool and none of them reference an existing fictional school.
- How many schools can it name?
