About the Character Trait Generator
A character built from three good qualities is boring, and one built from three faults is a cartoon. What holds attention is the gap between the surface and the interior, so every line here is a contradiction: something people see and something they do not. Seventy strengths meet seventy flaws, giving 4,900 pairs like "quick to forgive on the outside, secretly keeping score underneath".
The phrasing is deliberately behavioural rather than abstract. Instead of loyal or insecure you get "protective of underdogs" and "convinced everyone is judging", because a behaviour can be put on the page in a scene while an abstract noun cannot. That makes each line usable as a prompt: write the moment where the outside slips and the inside shows.
Novelists use these for supporting cast who need one memorable angle. Game masters roll one per named NPC so the table can tell them apart. Screenwriters often keep the flaw hidden until the second act and let the strength carry the introduction. If you want the full sheet rather than a single contradiction, the Personality Generator adds a quirk and a fear, and the OTP Prompt Generator gives two characters something to do about it.
How to use
- Choose how many trait pairs you need, one per character.
- Press Generate and assign the lines to the characters you are developing.
- Reroll a line if the contradiction is too comfortable to be interesting.
- Copy the batch into your notes or Download it as plain text.
Common questions
- Why does every line have two halves?
- The gap between how a character is seen and what they hide is the engine of most scenes, so the tool always gives you both.
- Can two characters share a strength?
- Yes, and it is often useful. The same strength with a different hidden flaw produces two very different people.
- How many pairs are possible?
- Seventy strengths and seventy flaws combine into 4,900 different contradictions.
- Are these suitable for a tabletop game?
- Yes. One line per named NPC gives your table an immediate handle on who they are talking to.
