About the Flag Maker
Most national and regional flags are built from a handful of repeating patterns, and this maker offers the nine that cover the majority of them: horizontal and vertical tricolours, bicolours, the Nordic offset cross, a canton over stripes, a diagonal band, a saltire, and a triangle at the hoist. Choose the field, then set the three colours by hex value or by a plain name such as crimson.
The emblem sits on top of the field and can be a five point star, a disc, a crescent, a cross, an open ring, or a ring of twelve small stars. On the canton and hoist triangle layouts the emblem shifts to the free side of the field so it does not collide with the stripes. Emblem size is a percentage of the shorter edge, which keeps a badge that looks right on a 3:2 flag looking right when you switch to 2:1.
The four proportions on offer are the ones flag makers actually use. Three to two is the most widespread; two to one belongs to the Commonwealth tradition; five to three shows up across central Europe; one to one is used by Switzerland and the Vatican. Common questions
- What flag ratio should I pick?
- Three to two suits most designs and is the commonest ratio in the world. Choose two to one only if the field pattern needs the extra length.
- Can I use my own colours instead of the presets?
- Yes. Each colour box accepts a hex value like #0b6e4f, an rgb() string, or one of the common colour names.
- Why does the emblem move on some layouts?
- On the canton and hoist triangle fields the centre is already busy, so the emblem is placed in the open area on the fly side instead.
- Is the output good enough for printing?
- Raise the width to 2400 pixels or more. The flag is drawn with vector paths at whatever size you ask for, so the edges stay sharp.
