About the Online Mirror

Hotel rooms, meeting rooms and desks at the wrong end of an office all share the same problem: no mirror when you need one. A laptop camera is a decent substitute, and this page turns it into one without installing anything. Press start, allow the camera prompt, and the picture appears at whatever size the window allows.

The flip switch is the part people notice. A camera hands the browser the scene as it really is, so raised right hands appear on the left and every logo reads backwards, which feels wrong to anyone expecting a mirror. Flipping reverses the picture horizontally so it behaves the way a bathroom mirror does. Turn it off when you are checking that text on a shirt or a badge reads correctly to other people, which is exactly what a video call will show them.

Quality, camera choice and a small set of looks are in the toolbar; high contrast helps in a dim room, black and white is useful when judging how a shot is lit rather than how it is coloured. Save a still and the frame is drawn to a canvas and downloaded straight to the device, flipped and filtered to match what you see. The stream is never recorded, never uploaded and stops the moment you press stop or close the tab. To light your face while you use it, open the white screen on a phone beside you.

How to use

  1. Press Start camera and allow access when the browser asks.
  2. Leave Mirror the image ticked for normal mirror behaviour.
  3. Switch to the back camera on a phone if you want to look at something else.
  4. Press Save a still for a PNG, or Stop camera to switch the light off.

Common questions

Is the video sent anywhere?
No. The stream goes from the camera to the page and nowhere else, and no part of it is recorded unless you press the save button yourself.
Why is the camera light still on after I finish?
The camera stays open until you press stop or close the tab. Pressing stop ends every track, which switches the indicator light off.
Nothing happens when I press start.
Camera access needs a secure connection and permission for the site. Check the padlock menu in the address bar and make sure no other app is holding the camera.
Why does my writing appear backwards?
Because the mirror option is on, which reverses the picture. Turn it off to see text the way other people on a video call will see it.
