About the White Screen
White fills every sub-pixel at once, which makes it the shade that exposes dirt, clouding and colour drift. Hold a phone at an angle against a white field and greasy patches appear immediately; on a large monitor the same field reveals the greyish clouds that panel makers call mura, plus any tint difference between the middle and the corners.
The tool doubles as a light source. Warm white at a reduced brightness is comfortable to read by in a dark room and does not flood a webcam with blue, while pure white at full brightness turns a tablet into a rough light box: tape a sheet of paper over the glass and the lines underneath show through well enough to trace. The brightness control dims the field inside the page, so you can keep the operating system slider where it is and still get a gentle glow.
Because this is only a coloured box and a full screen request, there is nothing to install and nothing leaves the device. For a face lit by the panel, open the online mirror on a second device and adjust the angle until the shadows sit where you want them. Common questions
- Can this replace a proper ring light?
- For a short call it works surprisingly well, especially on a tablet held to one side of the camera. It cannot match a real light for output, but it fills shadows nicely.
- What are the cloudy patches I see on white?
- That is backlight clouding, often called mura. Every LCD has some and it only matters when it is visible during normal use, not just on a pure white field.
- Why does one corner look yellow?
- Panels are rarely uniform in colour temperature. Small shifts across a large screen are common and become obvious only when the whole display shows one flat tone.
- Is a white background good for cleaning a screen?
- It shows dust and hair well, though grease and fingerprints stand out more against a dark field, so it is worth checking with both.
